A few suggestions of things to do around Abu Dhabi
EMIRATES PALACE:
You can simply go in and wander around. If they ask you at the gate what you are going in to do just tell them 'the cafe' or 'the exhibition'.
They often have temporary art/craft exhibitions on that are free and a good size to have a look around with the kids.
They also have an exhibition on highlighting the museums planned for Saadiyat Island - great models to look at and again not too extensive so suitable for the kids.
Both of these exhibition spaces are on the main level off to the right - near the cafe....a great place for a treat, however the cakes are large & rich & 45 dirhams each with gold leaf topping in some cases, but delicious. We recommend the blueberry cheesecake! They don't have high chairs that I am aware of but you can eat at a table right by the cake displays where there is no carpeting or plush chairs to smear cake on!
They have live musicians playing most of the time - either a harpist, a pianist or a trio playing regional instruments so you can pause to watch them too.
Go all the way to the back at the main level and you'll find elevators tucked away behind a door to the right of the escalators. Go down to the basement level where the theatre is. Down there are long hallways that are lined with fake full sized palm trees! Great fun to run around.
Outside at the ground level are also lots of fountains you can walk around even if only for a brief bit of air.
There is no need for valet parking. Just follow the signs to self parking.
SAADIYAT ISLAND:
Check out the Manarat Saadiyat museum on Saadiyat Island.Their permanent exhibition about the island is excellent for all ages and their temporary exhibitions are always great.

In the museum plan to go to the Al Fanr restaurant for snacks/lunch/dinner - it has a little children's area at the far end and a great variety of food including a children's menu. And surprisingly it has a licence to serve alcohol.
CORNICHE WATER PARK:
If you're an early riser the water park down on the corniche opens early in the summer. I am pretty sure the guy said 7am the last time we were there.
GRAND MOSQUE:
They do tours at 5pm and although it is non-stop hot, this might be a possibiliy to consider.
